Charles
Perrault was born on January 12th, 1628 in Paris where he died at the
age of 75 on May 16th, 1703.
He
is mostly famous for his “Mother Goose” tales.
Charles
Perrault is one of the great authors of the 17th century. His work
consisted mainly in the collection and transcription of tales which
belonged to the French oral tradition. He is one of the formalizers
of the written literary genre of the fantasy tale.
After
having graduated from law school in 1651, he becomes a member of the
bar but out of boredom decides to work as a clerk for his brother who
is Receiver General of the Ministry of Finance. He becomes the right
hand man of Colbert, who is responsible for artistic and literary
policy under Louis XIV.
Upon
reading his poem “The Century of Louis the Great” to the French
Academy, in which he praises the era of Louis XIV, he sparks the
Debate between the Traditionalists and the Modernists and becomes the
leader of the Modernists.
Perrault
was a jack of all trades who tried out the gallant style with
“Dialogue of love and friendship” and “The Mirror or the
Metamorphosis of Prayer”.
Even
today, we all know him from his stories such as “Little Red Riding
Hood”, “Cinderella” or “Bluebeard” which we have read or
been told and which belong to the oral tradition of literature.
